Girl, I know the struggle. Sometimes we need an extra push to get things done in our apartment. I live with my husband, and to be honest, he doesn’t like to clean at all. If it were up to him, the apartment would always be dirty and dusty. However, thanks to the tips and tricks I learned, the apartment is always shiny and everything is in order. Don’t get me wrong, I also struggle with motivation when it comes to cleaning. I can’t be the only one, right? Lol.

One of them is to read a book called Atomic Habits, which literally changed my life for good and helped me get back on track with good habits. This book helped me wake up at 6 a.m. to go to the gym, which was huge for me. I highly recommend it. You’ll automatically start working on yourself, your habits and your motivation.

Cleaning Motivation Habits
Habit 1: Start with Your Least Favorite Chore
I hate cleaning the dishes, but I always start with them. When I save my least favorite task for last, I struggle to get started and end up putting it off. However, when I finish washing the last dish, I feel a great sense of satisfaction that encourages me to continue with the rest of the house chores. This makes the remaining tasks seem much more manageable.
Habit 2: Treat cleaning as time for yourself
Cleaning your apartment or house is synonymous with taking care of yourself. And it doesn’t need to be boring. Take advantage of that time to listen to an audiobook, play music, or enjoy your favorite podcast. Transform cleaning into a moment for personal enjoyment—it’s an excellent idea to relax while doing something productive.
Habit 3: Clean only 10 things
When I don’t feel like cleaning, I promise myself that I will tidy up just 10 things. I begin with simple tasks like taking out the trash, making the bed, or cleaning inside the microwave. Usually, once I finish those small tasks, I find myself motivated to continue and aim for more than just 10 chores. So, I make another list of goals and commit to doing 10 additional cleaning tasks. Before you know it, you’ve cleaned everything. Starting with order tends to lead to more organization, while procrastination often leads to further delays. This habit is your key to breaking out of your cycle of laziness.
Habit 4: Clean following a specific pattern
To clean faster and more efficiently, you need to follow a pattern. For example, I start by cleaning the ceiling fan with a duster, then move on to the windows and walls, followed by the furniture, and finally, I clean the floor. Establishing this pattern ensures you maintain an organized workflow throughout your cleaning process.
Cleaning Motivation Habit 5: Use a chronometer
Another helpful tip is to set deadlines for cleaning each area of your house. Having a limited time to clean fills you with adrenaline and motivates you to clean faster. It’s like a game against the clock, driving you to be more efficient. This approach also helps you distribute your time better.
Cleaning Motivation Habit 6: Invest in a cleaning cart
This will save you tons of back and forth. The cart will follow you wherever you go and will have all the necessary materials and cleaning supplies within arm’s reach. Opt for a cart with three tiers so you can fit more supplies. You won’t need to search for your products if you keep all of them inside the cart.
Habit 7: Give your family/roommate some responsibilities
If you have a big family, make sure everyone pitches in to help with the cleaning. Assign specific tasks to each family member to ensure the workload is evenly distributed. For example, your husband can be responsible for taking out the trash, keeping the guest bathroom clean, and washing the towels. Your daughter can be in charge of cleaning her own room. This strategy helps maintain shared spaces and prevents the burden from falling on one person. By working together, you can keep your home clean and organized more efficiently.
